(三)评卷实例(1999年)
Directions:
A. Study the following graphs carefully and write an essay in at least 150 words.
B. Your essay must be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET II.
C. Your essay should cover these three points:
1. effect of the country's growing human population on its wildlife
2. possible reason for the effect
3. your suggestion for wildlife protection
样卷1.得分14分
From these graphs, we can draw a conclusion that, with the growth of human population, the number of species has decreased rapidly in America, and some species have even vanished from our planet.
Why does this phenomenon appear? I think there are several possible reasons for this. First, with a rapid growth of population, more and more people came to live where some wild species have been living. Then these species have to move to other places. Some of them probably can not adapt to the new evironment and die. Second, although many people look on the wildlife as their friends, some people may not think so. They catch a lot of wild animals and sell them in order to get more money. Third, with the development of the industry, the natural balance and the ecologic environment are destroyed. The deforestration has become more and more serious. So some of the wildlives become homeless and extinct.
In order to protect the wildlife, I have some suggestions. First, the governments should make laws to prevent them from being caught and killed. Second, the governments should educate people to love nature and protect it. Third, as for ourselves, we should take practical actions to protect our living environment.
样卷2.得分11分
There are two graphs about the changes of population and wildlife in the U.S. As is seen in the graphs, with the rising of population, the number of extincted species increased. Obviously, there is a strong effect of population over the wildlife in this country.
Why does is happen? I can say there are many reasons. First, man continued to hunt animals for food and money and many valuable species were killed. Second, wildlife lost their surviving space, bacause man expanded their industry at a rapid speed. More land was needed for this development As a result, wildlife has no place to live. The last reason is that the environment for wildlife has been polluted, and many species died.
In my opinion, we should educate people to love the wild animals, not to kill and eat them. We also need to provide wildlife with a good living conditions. We must also lay down a law to protect the wild animals.
得卷3.得分8分
As is shown in the table, the number of people increased from less than one million in 1800 to 250 millon in 1990 in U.S. According to the figures in table, we also can see that there has been a sharp dicline in the wildlife species. It's clear that the country's growing population have a harmful effect on wildlife.
The possible reason I think are as follows: For the first place, the population growth makes the room of the wildlife. Secondly, the pollution causing of people gets rid of large number of wildlife. Maybe there are some other reason to show the wildlife downs, but people generally believe that the above reason are common acceptable.
From the above, we can see that it is urgent to protect the wildlife. In my opinion, we ask the govenments to take measures to keep the population growth under controlling, the other policy that is to work on new regulations for wildlife, the man who get rid of the wildlife should be punished. I'm sure my opinion is both sounded and grounded.
样卷4.得分5分
According to the graphs given by the table. The are shown the effect of the country's growing human population on its wildlife. The number of people have been on the rise from 1800 to 1980. But the number of species had been on the rise from 1600 to 1900, and the species had died out since 1900.
There are I think some reasons for the ups and downs of population growth. On the first place, as a people with the development of society, the standard of living conditions continues to improvement. The birth rates is increcased and the death rates is at the declined. Secondly the species, on the other hand, are lived on the rural areas. Their conditions of lives were slow and they were able to protect themselves. So species is decrease.
As far as I concern, I suggest that we did our best to protect wildlife. The government should make effective measures to protect wildlife. Everyone should educated to propect wildlife.
样卷5.得分2分
From tables, we can see that the country's growing human population on its wildlife. It rise 250 from 1800 to 1900. I think, there at least two reasons. For one thing, some people want to return the nation. They free themself from hard works. For another, some people lover the wildlife. People's life lever has risen fastly. On the second table, it is clear that the risen rate faster from 1800 to 1900 than from 1600 to 1800.
But, there are degened. Firstly, there are not secured. There many harmful things in the wild. Secondly, the lead to traffic in the weekend. Beacause mostly people are freed in the same time.
As far as I am concerned, I think that people should paid much attention to the wildlife protection.
样卷6.得分0分
According to the figures given in the bar charts, it took from the beginning of human life to the year 1830 for the population of the earth to reach one billion. That represents a time span of at least two million years. Then the world population increased rapidly, adding up to two billion in 1930. The next billion was added by 1960, only thirty years. From then on the global population was on the rise, amounting to 4 billion in 1975, which is another billion people in only 15 years.
There are at least two reasons, I think, for the sharp increase in world population. In the first place, the birth rate is continuously climbing in many countries, especially in developing countries. Generally speaking, people there hold the opinion that children don't cost much and when they get old enough to work they will bring in money and that when parents are old, they will take care of them. Secondly, the death rate i most developed countries declines steadily because people's standards of living are raised and health care improves.
In may opinion, the chief reason for the population growth is not so much a rise in birth rates as a fall in death rates as result of improvements in medical care.

2001年作文范文
When we use the world "love" we do not simply mean an attraction to a person of the opposite sex, which is a very narrow definition of the word. The picture below illustrates the real maning of love, by stressing the fact that love is emotional strength, which can support us no matter how dark the world around us becomes. In fact , throughout history people of many different cultures have regarded love as the noblest of human emotions.
As an example of the power of love, we should remember how the Chinese people of all nationalities respond to the call to help the victims of natural disasters every year. Although their incomes are still low by international standards, people all over the country do not hesitate to donate whatever they can -- be it money or goods -- to help their needy fellow citizens. Moreover, they do this with no thought of gain for themselves.
In my opinion, the best way to show love is to help people who are more unfortunate than we are. We should always be ready to give a helping hand to those who are in trouble, no matter whether they are farmily members or complete strangers. In this way, we can help to make the world a better place, for ,as the picture shows, the darker the shadows of sorrow become, the more brightly the lamp of love shines.

Among all the worthy feelings of mankind, love is probably the noblest. It is of the utmost importance to the human beings, Everybody not only needs love, but also should give love.
As is described in the picture, "love is a lamp which is brighter in darker places. " This is indeed true. People in darker places need more light than ordinary people. Maye even a dim light can give them much hope for a better life and progress. Maybe just a thread of light will call forth their strength and courage to step out of their difficulties.
For instance when someone is starving to death, just a little food and water from you may save his life. Or when a little girl in a poor rural area drops out of school because of poverty, just a small surn of money from you may support her to finish her schooling and change her life, you have given love which is like a lamp in a dark place where light is most needed.
So to sum up, we should offer our help to all who are in need. We expect to get love from others and we also give love to others so when you see someone in difficulty or in distress and in need of help, don't hesitate to give your love to him. I believe then the ralationship between people will be harmonious and our society will be a better place for us to live in. (20分)

It is generally believed that love is a hot topic which is most talked about. This is true not only in China but also in other countries. We live in different countries, speak different languages, but love is something common to us all. But how to show love may be different with different people in different countries. This is something we should give more thought to.
As shown in the picture, love is like a lamp which shines brightest in dark places. This tells us a simple truth: Love is lika a lamp. It is most valuable when it is most needed. For example, once I saw a foreign lady get lost in the street. She could not speak Chinese and nobody seemed to be able to help her. Though my English is not very good and I am a shy person, I thougth she needed help very much. I asked her what she wanted. She told me she lost her way, so I showed her the way to her hotel. It was a small thing but she thanked me very much because my help was needed very much. My help was like a lamp in a dark place.
I think we all should be like a lamp in a dark place, showing our love, giving our help to others, even to strangers. In this way we can make this world a harmonious and peaceful world.(18分)
(3)
I saw a picture recently in your newspaper. There is a small lamp in the picture and a flame on the lamp, which is smiling. The lamp says, "Love is a lamp, it will be brightest in the darkest place." I think it shows us a vivid picture: Where and who need live, love is the noblest feeling. So I believe that we should give our love to those who are in need. If everyone can give his love to whom in need, then the world will be filled with love.
For example, in the countryside. There are millions of pupils, who can't afford to attend school. Some of them never attend school. They are unfortunate, but now there are many warm-hearted people who give help to the pupils. Of course, we can also show our love in many other ways. For instance. As a friend, we should help our friends when they are in trouble. There is a saying: A friend in need is a friend indeed. As a young man, we should respect the older. When we walk on the street, we can help the blind or old people and children to cross the road.
In a word, There are many ways to show our love. The people all over the world should love and respect each other. The best way to show our love is to help others when they are in difficulities.(16分)
(4)
Everyone may agree that among all the worthy feelings of mankind, love is probably the noblest. But people have different understanding of it. As can be seen from the picture, there is one point of view. It says that love is like a lamp, which is brighter when the dark is heavier. This means that love should be given to where it is most needed. I agree with this point of view.
Take my experience for a example. Being poor, I have to do some part-time jobs to support my study in Beijing. I always feel love from other friends and families when they help me either in material or in spiritual aspects. I love them and want to give my help to other people at the same time. But some of my classmates take their parents' help for granted.
They never try to support them by working on the side. They have no idea of difficulties in one's life. Therefore, they don't realize the value of love.
As for the best way to show love, I think, first of all, everyone should be couraged and required to try to be self-reliant. Secondly, when one is in trouble, others should help him. Finally we should educate people to appreciate help from other people. Only in this way can our society become a big happy family.(14分)
(5)
As is shown in the picture, we can see clearly that love is like a lamp and the darker the environment is, the brighter love is. And it is no denying that among all the worthy feelings of mankind, love is the noblest. Actually, because of love, many people in trouble get help and encourage, so they will try their best to overtake the difficulty and look forward to a better future. What's more, when others are in trouble, they take helping them for granted. Therefore, love will be found all over the world.
Several years ago, some areas suffer disaster because of heavy rain. The PLA help them rebuild their families. This year, Taiwan also suffer disaster because of the earth quake. Many people in our country do our best to help them.
It is necessary to take some measure to spread the love. For one thing, we should encourage people who have love and are happy to help others. For another, we should enhance the awareness of people that love is benefit for all of this society. Also I make sure that by this way, we have a brighter future.(12分)

In the picture below, in the full dark situation, a little of spark enlightens the dark. The naive spark smiles so sweet. It seems to be saying, as the caption in the picture reads, I am a light of love, the more dark where I am, the more enlighten.
Among all the worthy feelings of mankind, love is probably the noblest. As a matter of fact, all of us survive in a love world. We offer love, more important, we need love. I am a hardworking student that is specialized in Computer Science and Application. Once a time, I lost my mind accidentally as a result I dropped down from the downstairs, badly injured. But for my roomates' help I couldn't live up not only in physics but also in spirits. I thank them genuinly. What I accomplished today party attribute to all of them giving me a hand to my school work. I hope I can live up to myself as well as my roommates.
As far as I am concerned, love should be showed by two means as follow. At the first place, we should keep a critical eye on others' love showed to us. Of course, most of the love is good for us, nevertheless, some does harm to us, such as helping to cheating in exams. The last but no the least, we should show love hearts to those needing them. As we know, Hope Project is the largest love project in our country, we should pay highly attention on it rather than neglect. In addition, we should cultivate the awareness to help others in our daily life. Let's hold our hands to build our country filled in love hearts.(10分)

This picture tells us a reality that love can bring up lighting and light will make everywhere bright. Although the light is weak, it plays a great effect which will make people more firmly than before.
When I was at middle-school, my parent were both out of employee. My parent felt disappointed and I was greatly worried my future. Our life became very terrible, I even dicided to suicide. Our neighbour learnt about my family's conidition, and they began to help us. They lent a few money to my parent and my parent use these money to open a shop. They help me to study. My parent finally got through hard life. So I say that love is great.
I think that there are some ways to show love. You may give money to the poor and help the old do some working and give your love to the disable. The best way show love is from heart rather than from appearance. By this way those people who accepted helps will feel warmly. Our world will bright if everyone show love.(8分)
(8)
The picture imply that love is very important to the needy. Love like a lamp which is brighter in the darker place. Let's haven a example. When a person ,who is around us , has a serious ill and need a sum money to pay for the medical fee but he or his family can't affort it, well will make our efforts to help him. It is clear that love is important to everyone, in particular, to the needy.
It is well known to all, love is probably the noblest among all the worthy feeling of mankind, but everyone has his/her own understanding of it. As far as I am concerned, I think the best way to show love is our suitable help when others are facing with difficulty and need our helps. If we help others without thinking whether others need, it perhaps decrease other's confident and at the same time take us in troubles.
As is know to all, everything has two sides. Show love properly will take effective function, otherwise it will take negative function. As a consequence, we should not only have love but also show it properly.(6分)
(9)
The picture show that love is a lamp which lead a bright light and hope when one involved in dark. In China, we can see many stories about love, for example, From newspaper we can often read about "The Project hope." There are many people delvate himself to help others. In remote country, some children can't go to school because no money. However, in other district, there are many people to provide money to help these children.
From this picture, a small light bright some area. We can read much from it. As a university students, we can do much, do best. We can study hard science knowledge. We should improve our from all kind of aspect. As long as we devote oneself to help those troublesome man.(4分)

The symbolic is a light, it will be more powerful when the circumstances is more dark. Everyone has symbolic and symbolic is a very good matter to us. It come from us and it can help us. The symbolic is not only a feeling, but also is a character.
Mrs Bingxin is a good writer with symbolic. She gave all she can do to the society, include money, book and her heart. She tried her best to help those people who needs help.
We should show our love to the people, furthermore, we should show our love by the best way. I believe we have to do is not only the word, but also is the action, not only the money, but also the heart. If all of us have give our symbolic, the world can change more beautiful.(2分)

Widespread tobacco consumption has led to grave consequences, yet the tobacco companies still claim that they make a valbuable contribution to the world economy.
There is a discussion in a newspaper on the above two viewpoints.
Write an essay to the newspaper
1) criticizing their view and
2) justify your stand.
In your essay, make full use of the information provided in the pidctures printed below.
You should write about 200 words on ANSWER SHEET 2.
The majority of people would agree that cigarette smoking has caused serious problems. But the tobacco companies insist that they contribute greatly to the world economy by paying taxes to the government and employing hundreds of workers.
Personally, I believe that cigarette production and consumption threatens to do more harm than good. Firstly, smoking is responsible for many fatal diseases such as lung cancer, heart diseases and so on. According to the survey, tobacco consumers account for about 20% of the world population, and among them, three million people die from smoking-related diseases every year. The fact that the output of tobacco production is reduced from 143.64 billion pounds in 1994 to 142 billion pounds in 1995 also suggests that people have come to realize the negative effects of smoking. Secondly, tobacco consumption is extremely wasteful of money. As is indicatd in the pictures, 200 billion US dollars is lost due to smoking each year. Obviously, the total loss of money around the globe substantially exceeds the gain in the industry.
In conclusion, as the economic development aims at making our life better, we cannot sacrifice our health for short-term financial benefits. If we have to spend more and more money providing medical services for those who suffer from smoking-related illnesses, the notion of promoting economy via tobacco production is not justifable. It is high time that we fought for the total tobacco ban.

This pie chart gives us an overall picture of the exports of manufacturing industries in Hong Kong in 1996. The first thing we notice is that these are all light industries. They are also what is called "labor-intensive", meaning that they employ large numbers of people.
The clothing industry accounts for the most exports ——32.7 percent, worth HK$ 69.447 million. The electronics industry is in second place with 26 percent of the exports, worth HK$ 55.067 million. Textiles, timepieces, chemicals and jewelry together only account for about 18 percent of the exports, but they produce items worth a total of over HK$ 50 million.
It seems to me that Hong Kong, which has a smalll territory and few natural resources, has made the right choice in developing these industries. They produce mainly export goods, which bring in much-needed foreign currency. At the same time, they provide employment for the maximum number of people.

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF POPULATION GROWTH
The two charts show that the increase in the U.S. population has been accompanied by a corresponding decline in the number of wildlife species. Far too many species have been lost already. This poses a danger to ecological balance.
As the human population expands, more and more wild animals are hunted for food, or because they are thought to present a threat to man. But studies show that one of the primary causes of the disappearance of wildlife is pollution, which is one of the consequences of population growth and economic development. This makes us wonder if man is able to share this planet in harmony with other life forms.
In my opinion, it is imperative to take steps to reverse the disturbing trend illustrated in the charts. One measure would be to forbid the building of cities in areas where wild life is threatened with extinction. But, more imporantly, man must learn to stop polluting the environment, or he himself will become extinct.

Labour Force and the Employed Population of Hong Kong
(year-on-year growth rate)
On this graph we can see that the rate of employment in Hong Kong kept pace with the changes in the size of the labor force in the period 1996-1996. This means that as the number of jobs increawd, so did the number of workers, and vice versa. Usually employment depends on the growth or shrinkage of the conomy.
After growing by over 2 percent in the third quarter of 1991, both the rate of employment and size of the labor force dropped sharply to nearly minus 2 percent one year later. In the period 1993 and 1994 both figures rose to a nearly 4 percent growth. In the first quarter of 1996 both achieved a peak of nearly 5 percent, and they have been rising ever since.
This unusual trend, I think, is because of Hong Kong's immigration policy. When the economy is booming, Hong Kong allows more workers from China's mainland to enter and find jobs. When economic growth slows down, it admits fewer immigrants. Besides, when jobs become scarce many people leave to look for work in other parts of China. This explains why the rate of employment and the size of the labor force in Hong Kong are roughly the same.

Annual Payroll of a U.S. Inc
Bank Number Wages paid
Manager 5 $110,000
Supervisor 25 $350,000
telelr 500 $600,000
Total 530 $1,060,000
The chart shows statistics relating to the payroll of a US bank. The employees are divided into three categories: managers, supervisors and tellers. In the second column we are informed of the numbers of employees in these categories. In the third column are listed the total wages paid annually to the people in each of the three categories.
We can see from these numbers that the most numerous employees are the tellers; the next most numerous are the supervisors; and the fewest are the managers. The statistics also tell us that the best-paid employees are the managers, earning US $22,000 each; following by the supervisors, with US $14,000 each; and lastly, the tellers, taking home US $1,200 each.
Judging by these figures, the lowest-paid empoyees are the most numerous and do the least-skilled jobs, while the highest-paid ones are the least numerous and do the highest-skilled jobs. From this, we can conclude that this bank values skilled and experienced people, as it rewards them with higher salaries.

Aging of Population in China
Many countries will experience aging populations in the next century because of declining birth and mortality rates. China will soon join their ranks. Accoding to statistics, the aging of China's population will approach its peak by the middle of the next century, with the percentage of the people aged beyond 60 making up 27.4 percent of the total. That means one out of every four people will be elderly.
As for the issue of aging, its situation has been growing increasingly severe in spite of the fact most people are still ignorant of the problems it brings about. Firstly, with families becoming smaller and living pace escalating, it is even graver for families to care for aged members adequntely. Secondly, aging causes a relative decline in working force in that fewer people have to support the increasing aged people. Consequently, the productivity of the whole society is affected to some extent. Thirdly and most importantly, the aging of population in China resulted from the successful implementation of family planning has not been synchronized with national economic progress.
The rapidity of the population's aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of countermeasures. No doubt they key is to build a solid economic foundation. Meanwhile, importance shall be attached to overall social progress by changing the backward situation in social security, welfare and service. What's more, family care and community services shall also be encouraged.

Write a composition based on the information given in the graph below.
Controlling Cigarrette Smoking
What is clearly indicated in the graph is that we Chinese are consuming more and more cigarrettes, while the westerners are cutting down their smoking. The average cigarrette consumption per person of China in 1991 increased over 50% compared with that in 1980.
Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to health and much medical evidence has proved this point. But more and more Chinese tend to smoke. There are several reasons for this. First, smoking doesn't lead to disease immediately. Maybe a man's health is becoming bad in a long period without consciousness. Second, it is hard for a long-standing smoker to give up smoking. Third, the young believe that smoking makes them appear mature and helps them make friends.
Since smoking is no good, we should try our best to control cigarrette smoking. First, we shoul make the young know the danger of smoking. In addition, it is necessary to forbid smoking in the public places by law. Last, the government must control the production of tabacco industry. Only so can we reduce the number of Chinese smokers.

Pollution is becoming more and more serious all over the world. As is shown in the cartoon, two cars are giving off waste gas and three people trying to avoid breathing in the poisonous gas by masking their face with their hands. The poisonous gas sent off by factories, domestic appliances and automobiles has made the air unhealthy for people to breathe.
There is no denying that automobiles are indications of civilization, progress and development; nevertheless, automobiles cause the serious problem of air pollution. Scientists have warned that unless effective measures are taken, the problem of pollution will eventually get out of hand. Actually, people are showing a real concern over the problem. For example, there is an increasingly loud voice from the public for firm action against pollution from automobiles.
Indeed, the earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our descendants. In my opinion, we should work out concrete solutions to the problem of pollution from poisonous gas given off by automobiles. For example, the automobiles should be equipped with a device which can dispose of waste gas so as to prevent it from polluting air. Only in this way can we really solve the problem of air pollution caused by automobiles.

This picture shows two people reading the announcement on a billboard, and being shocked at the message. This is because the billboard is advertising a "Sale of Dead Bodies." The cartoon is a criticism of the careless use of simplified characters.
Obviously, the advertiser wants to inform people of the sale of something else——not dead bodies! But we don't know what it is, because the three characters which make up the message are used incorrectly. Nowadays too many people not only do not take enough care to write properly, they eve invent their own simplified ways of writing.
Simplifying the old, complicated characters has been a great benefit, enabling people to learn to read to write quickly. But we should stick to the standard simplified characters, make sure that we use them properly, and definitely not make up our own simplified characters. Otherwise, what was intended to make communication easier could result in making it more diffcult.

Today, the earth's deserts are spreading and getting larger and desertification is a serious problem facing the world. The major reason for this is irresponsible cutting down of trees. As is shown in the first cartoon, when people cut down trees desert forces on and becomes irrepressible.
People cut down trees for various reasons but they may forget that trees play a vital part in water and soil conservation. Trees can preserve moisture and fertility in the soil, protect soil against erosion and prevent fertile land from becoming desert. Therefore when people cut down all of the trees, the earth lies bare and dry in the hot sun, and desert is inevitable.
Desertification can lead to many other serious problems which may threaten the existence of human beings, such as a reduction of arable land, terrible droughts and famine. In order to prevent desertification, people have to plant trees, as the second cartoon shows. The time when people plant trees is the time when desert retreats. People should not cut down trees any more, as is done in the first cartoon, but rather, they should plant more trees, and only in this way can desertification be finally defeated.

The expenses on food have declined by 30% while those on clothing and recreation have increased respectivily by 9% and 7%. The statistics of rise and fall seem to exist in isolation but closely related to one another.
There are two factors accounting for these changes. Development in economy is an essential one in the five years. The increased income resulting from economic growth plays an important part in the less expense on food. Hence, a small percentage of total income is enough to cover food expense. Another one is the changes in life style. When foods presents no worry to the average, people begin to focus more of interest on handsome appearance and happy leisure time. As a result of such a shift, spending on clothing and recreation increased year after year.
From the analyses made above, we may come to the conclusion that people's living standards in Xi'an have been constantly improved between 1995 and 1999. With the further growth in economy and more changes in life style, the tendency indicated in the table will continue in the table will continue in the better direction.

1.电影观众越来越少
2.电视观众越来越多,因为……
3.然而,还是有人喜欢看电影,因为……

Film Is Giving Way to Tv
The latest statistics show that the number of people attending cinemas is getting steadily smaller. At the same time, the number of television viewers is growing at almost the same rate.
Experts say that these two trends are connected in three ways. First, over the past few decades television sets have appeared in almost every home. Second, films very quickly become available on video, and can be shown on the TV screen. Third, it is becoming more expensive to make films, and so prices of cinema seats are rising.
However, this does not mean the death of the movie industry. There will always be people who prefer to go out to see a film. This is because no matter how good a TV film or video is, it can never be as entertaining as a film shown on the "big screen."

How I Finance My College Education?
To many of the high-school students who have gained access to colleges of universities, the cost of higher education means a fraction of their parents' saving account. With many others, the tuition is collection of savings borrowed from relatives or close friends of their parents'. For those like me whose families are short of the conditions above, however, the best course of action is to resort to the education fund for a loan.
Among the factors contributing to my choice, there are three underlying ones. The primary one lies in the fact that the loan from the education fund can not only relieve my family immediately from anxiety about where to get the tuition but also exert little direct impact on its daily life that is already hard up. In addition to the worryfreeing advantage, the loan from education fund is usually interestfree, in which light my family is less likely to get into a vicious circle that may be caused by compound interest. And what is most important, such a loan will become a pushing force behind my pursuit of knowledge. Much evidence proves that a proper financial pressure usualy stimulates one to further efforts to lift himself out of the straits.
Although I haven't much option in the matter of tuition, I feel no regret for my decision. Instead, I will play my cards better than ever. I will spare no effort to be excellent in studies and strong in charactor for the sake of my family as well as of myself. That way I am bound to create a pathway to success.

Qualities for Successful Executives
In general, people believe what accounts for an executive's success is both a diploma corresponding to his ideal position and a lucky break; but in reality, for every administrator kissed by fortune there are hundreds more with admirable diplomas whose chancs were once seized on but lost again. According to a recent questionaire, eight or nine such cases out of ten result from personality conflicts rather than from lack of professional ability. To retain a position that can give full pay to your talent, therefore, you should cultivate the qualities as follows.
One trait is frequent acknowledgement of your boss's goals as your own. It too often happens that, when you are pursuing your ambitions, you are more apt to forget the primary reason you were hired: execution of the mission to help your boss accomplish his or her true objectives. For this reason, frequently deepening the sense of mission in your mind helps shift your aspirations into line with your bos's, thus ensuring the advancement in your career. Another attribute is the ability to make others, especially your subordinates, comfortable. As countless facts have proven, whoever wishes to be the kind of person others enjoy being around, whoever wishes to make people more efficient in work, and whoever wishes to win support from his subordinates, should put the people around him at ease and accept others for equally important coworkers. On the opposite extreme are the tough executives who may be winners on both academic and profitable point scale but losers of both "like" votes and permanent prosperity of their causes.
Perhaps most of all, a successful executive must be an optimist. Instead of reacting to any setback by assuming there is nothing they can do, optimists leave no stone untouched in finding the way out of every adversity and laugh through it. You may find constant inspiration in an old saying:" The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity and the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

Harmfulness of Fake Commodities
One negative aspect of China's rapid economic development is the phenomenon of fake and shoddy goods. In the hope of making quick profits, some unscrupulous people manufacture and sell substandard clothing, foodstuffs and medicines. This malpractice has caused alarm and concern among consumers, who are increasingly demanding that it be stamped out.
There is no denying that fake commodities do a lot of harm, not only to the normal development of the economy as a whole, but also, and more importantly, for the health of the general public. For example, in 1988 in Northwest China’s Shanxi Province a peasant sold fake liquor, resulting in the deaths of 27 people. Looked at from a wider perspective, the social evil of counterfeit goods has the side effect of undermining the people’s trust in the market economy.
It is high time to take firm steps to put an end to this unhealthy trend once and for all. First, the government should tighten the rules and regulations concerning the manufacture and sale of commodities, and make sure that they are enforced. Second, consumer’s associations should educate people to recognize shoddy goods and report them promptly to the authorities.

Do “lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?
There are people who believe that some numbers bring good luck, while others bring bad luck. For instance, in China the number eight is thought to be lucky. Turning our attention to the West, we find that the number seven is considered lucky, but the number 13 is avoided like the plague.
In spite of all these claims, most people would agree that there is little evidence that numbers have any influence on our lives. In fact, they say, the reverse seems to be the case. For one thing, we might expect calculators to break down every time they note the number 13, and for another, although every week has seven days we know that not every week is lucky for us.
Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the latter point of view. It is obvious that there is no scientific basis for the belief that there is a connection between luck and numbers. All in all, it seems to me to be superstition.

Gifts of Money to Children
It has long been a custom in China to give children money as gifts on the occasion of the lunar new year. What is raising widespread concern nowadays is the fact that these sums of money are getting larger and larger, luring children into becoming extravagant and wasteful. This has led to calls for the custom to be abolished.
Valid as this point of view is, there are many people who defend the custom. They say that the giving of money to children on special occasions encourages them to behave properly all the year round. Besides, by handling money, children can learn to become financially independent.
Weighing both these arguments, I have come to the conclusion that there is no need to take so drastic a step as doing away with this custom. So long as the amounts of money are not too large there is little danger that children will develop wasteful habits. However, adults should explain to their children how to spend their money wisely.

The Re-Employment of Laid-Off Workers
The market economy has brought China headaches as well as benefits, and one of the recent ones is the problem of finding new jobs for laid-off workers. There is no doubt that if employment is not found for this surplus labor force then there will be serious social consequences. Therefore, it is essential to explore ways to get laid-off workers back to work.
To my mind, priority should be given to the expansion of tertiary industry. My reason for stressing this is that tertiary industry can provide large numbers of jobs with few restrictions as to age, gender, cultural differences, etc. Besides, little capital is needed to set up enterprises in this field.
At the same time, the laid-off workers should be encouraged to help themselves. They can do this by attending training courses to improve their skills or acquire new ones. They can also use their initiative by pooling their money and investing in their own businesses.

Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?
A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of the College English Test (CET). But as to whether or not it is necessary to hold such a test, people’s ideas are not cut from the same cloth.
Many maintain that it is absolutely necessary. They base their arguments on the grounds that, with China’s door on the outside world opening wider and wider, a mastery of sopken English will be of great benefit to exhanges across cultures. And they also add that the introduction of this test into CET will much promote the college English teaching and learning as well. But others respond to this matter just the other way around and argue that the opposite is obviously true for our country. As they point out, in a culture like China where there is no English-speaking community, oral English can not find any way to get into our daily life, in which light this test is far from practical. Besides, they stress that most college students are too poor in colloquial expression to prepare themselves for this test.
I stick to the opinion that it is high time to adopt this test as an indispensable component of CET. As is well known to all, the entry of China into WTO will bring us into face-to-face contact with foreigners, in which case verbal communication will be inevitable and constant. Such a test will certainly condition us for the future challenge. From now on, therefore, I will focus more of my energy and time upon practicing spoken English for the sake of my adaptability to country’s tomorrow.

A. Title: Private car
B. Word limit: about 200 words (not including the given opening sentence)
C. Your composition should be based on the outline below and should start with the given opening sentence: “Nowadays any Chinese can enjoy the luxury of owning a private car-if he can afford it.”
D. Your composition should be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
Outline:
1) Advantages of owning a private car.
2) Disadvantages of owning a private car.
3) Should it be necessary to enlarge the private car market? Why or why not?.
Nowadays, any Chinese can enjoy the luxury of owning a private car -- if he or she can afford it. Having a car of your own means no more traveling to work on crowded buses or subway trains, and you can drop off the children at school on the way. Moreover, it also means that you can enjoy the weekends and holidays better, because with a car you can go to places where the regular buses and trains do not go, and so you can find a quiet scenic spot with no crowds.
However, there are drawbacks to owning a car. For one thing, with the increase in car ownership in recent years, the roads are becoming more and more crowded, often making the journey to work more of a nightmare than a dream. For another, it is not cheap to run a car, as the prices of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, not to mention the prices you have to pay for a licence and insurance coverage.
Having considered both sides of the argument, I have come to the conclusion that the advantages of owning a car outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, it seems to me that China should increase its output of automobiles and enlarge the private car market. The result would be that cars would become cheaper, while at the same time the extra demand would encourage the auto industry to produce more efficient and family -- oriented vehicles.

Assuming that a manager is going to interview some job applicants and one of his friends gives him a piece of advice that the first impression is not a reliable basis for judgment. This manager wants to hear more from others and decides to have a wall newspaper put up for more views on that topic.
You are going to write an article to offer your opinion about it.
You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
It is commonly said that one’s first impression of a person is the most important one, and this is certainly true when applied to job interviews. This is because the manager often has to interview a dozen or more candidates in the space of only one or two hours, allotting no more than a few minutes to each. Therefore, it is vital for the interviewee to make the best possible impression on his prospective employer during the interview.
However, the manager must be aware that he is seeing only the best side of the prospective employee and, as the saying goes, appearances can be deceptive. For instance, that smart new suit that the interviewee is wearing might have been hired from a tailor shop, or lent to him by his brother. In addition, the brief interview does not allow the manager to observe how well - - or how badly - - the interviewee might get along with his future colleagues.
On the other hand, an interviewee might give a bad impression through no fault of his own. It is possible that he woke up with a headache that morning, or arrived late for the interview because of a traffic jam. The manager must be alert to such accidents, and not judge the interviewee too harshly. So I think that, although the first impression counts for a lot, the employer should find out some background knowledge about the interviewee before deciding whether to hire him or not.

will there be an air -- conditioner “price battle” this year?
There is a discussion in a newspaper on the issue.
Write an essay to the newspaper
1) giving a brief introduction to the issue,
2) stating your view about the “price battle”, and
3) justifying your prediction.
You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
With the rapid advances in the standard of living of the Chinese people in recent years, air -- conditioners have joined other household electrical appliances as items in great demand. However, output has far exceeded supply, as manufacturers have scrambled for sales in this profitable market. As a result, fierce competition has driven them to resort to all sorts of measures to pull ahead of their rivals and avoid going bankrupt.
These measures include aggressive advertising campaigns, offering a free gift with every purchase of an air -- conditioner , and - - most important of all – lowering prices. Price wars are a common phenomenon whenever supply outstrips demand in a free – market economy, and China’s newly liberalized economy is no exception. Nevertheless, I do not think we will see a repeat of the recent price war in the air – conditioner market this year.
I have three reasons for my prediction. The first is that the earlier round of price – cutting eliminated the less – efficient manufacturers from the industry; so there are fewer companies supplying the market. The second is that the government has taken measures to regulate the air – conditioner market, eliminating the chaos that price wars entail. And the third is that with China’s admission to the WTO, manufacturers will have to offer more attractive – not cheaper – products.

1. Describe the picture
2. Deduce the purpose of the drawer of the picture
3. Suggest your counter – measures
Basically, what we see in this picture is a bird lamenting the fact that its home has been destroyed. Of course, birds usually make their homes in trees, and since there are no trees left in the picture – only the stumps, to show that the original trees have been chopped down – the bird is left without shelter. In fact, the bird has no choice but to perch on the handle of an axe, which has been used to destroy its original home.
We can deduce from this picture that the drawer is trying to attract our attention to the tragedy of the destruction of forests, which is part of the threat to the ecological balance of the planet. He seems to be saying that soon there will be no trees left in the world. In my opinion, the sad little bird is a symbol of all living things, including human beings, and, like the bird, we too will be left homeless if we allow the destruction of the environment to continue.
This simple picture is a wake – up call for the whole of the human race. If this vivid image of the grim future of our planet is not to become a reality, we must take positive steps right now to put an end the plundering of the Earth’s natural resources. It is clear that the drawer of the picture is urging us to start with a campaign to save the forests, which is something all of us can join by urging our local authorities to take positive measures to save the trees.

You wish to study at a certain foreign university. Write a letter inquiring about the situation there as regards accommodation, fees and qualifications.

I am a Chinese citizen who wishes to study at your university. My plan is to start my course next term, and I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to provide me with certain essential information.
First, what qualifications do I need to follow a course of study at your university? I already have a master’s degree from a university here in China, but I wonder if there are any further academic requirements. Second, how much are the tuition fees? Although I intend to be self – supporting, I would be interested to hear if there are any scholarships available for international students. Third, what is the situation as regards accommodation? There are two main opinions concerning the development of private cars in China: One maintains that their free development should be encouraged, while the other argues that it must be sternly restricted.
B. Time limit: 40 minutes
C. Word limit: about 200 words
D. Your essay must be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET II.
Should the development of private cars be encouraged or restricted in China? To judge this issue, we should look at three aspects: What are the advantages of private cars; what are their disadvantages; and is China ready for the free development of private cars?
First of all, the private car is a symbol of freedom. It enables an individual or a family to travel anywhere and at any time, without relying on public transport. It is convenient for shopping and transporting children to and from school. Moreover, in the case of illness, it can carry its owner or other sick person to hospital without delay.
However, too many private cars can lead to traffic jams, thus slowing down life and work rather than speeding it up. In addition, automobiles are major polluters of the atmosphere. And, last but not least, the more cars there are on the roads, the more traffic accidents occur.
It seems to me that China, at its present stage of development, should restrict the number of private cars. For one thing, it would be a waste of resources to build a huge automobile industry at a time when only a few people can afford to buy cars. For another, the country must first bring pollution under control before adding to the problem with more cars.

Statistics show that no more than 40% of people who take the college entrance exams pass. Because a college education is regarded as the key to a successful career, this puts enormous pressure on the applicants. It also causes social problems, as those who fail consider that they have disgraced their families.
It seems to me that the exams are unfair, for three reasons: First, applicants with different abilities are faced with the same type of exam paper, second, the results of a mere three days of examination affect the applicant’s whole future; and third, applicants who can afford private tutors usually score higher marks than those who are poorer, but perhaps more intelligent.
To improve the system of college entrance exams, I suggest the following steps: the exam papers should be graded to take into account the different levels of ability and the different backgrounds of the applicants; in addition to the actual exam, a complete assessment of the applicant’s educational achievements should be made; and tutoring in examination techniques should be made available to all.

A Letter of Request
You find that your study load is too heavy. Write a letter to your college teacher explaining why you need to withdraw from two courses. Ask if it is possible to obtain a refund.
Dear Prof. James,
I am writing to formally request to withdraw from two courses: Introduction to Elementary Education (EDU 602) and Teaching Methods (EDU 619).
The main reason for reducing my course load is that I am finding it extremely difficult to manage six courses. In the beginning of the term, I was perhaps overly optimistic about juggling both my full – time studies and my part – time job (20 hours/week). Because I really must work part time, I have no other choice but to decrease my course load. I am planning on taking the two courses during the summer semester, if they are available, so that I will be able to complete all the courses for the degree program by the following year.
I would also like to request a tuition refund, and hope I am not too late to receive the full reimbursement. I am sorry for any inconveniences I have caused by this change in plans. This decision was not taken lightly, and I do appreciate the king consideration you have shown to me.
Thank you for your attention to these requests. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 277-9144. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

A Letter of Advice/Suggestion
You have a friend who is about to enter university, and he wants you to advise him on which subject to specialize in – history, in which he is very interested, or computer science, which offers better job prospects.
Dear John,
You have asked me for my advice concerning whether you should study history or computer science at university, and I will try to make some useful suggestions.
You must keep in mind that, above all, your university training is a preparation for your future career. Therefore, your first consideration should be to study a subject which will best equip you to earn a living. There is no doubt that the field of computers offers far job opportunities than history.
Besides, we are now in the age of the high - technology revolution. For the foreseeable future, not only will it be necessary for everyone to be computer - literate, it will also be necessary for them to be equipped with computer skills merely to earn a living! History, I'm afraid, however fascinating it may be, offers few career prospects.
Of course, you don't have to devote all your time at university to studying computers and nothing else. On the contrary, I would recommend that you keep up your reading of history in your spare time. That way, you will find that your leisure hours are enriched while you prepare yourself for a worthwhile career in computers.
Yours sincerely,
James

Private Colleges
Li Ming, one of my former classmates, went to a private college after his failure to pass the College Entrance Examinations last year. Li Ming's case is not unique, and thousands of middle-school graduates are admitted by hundreds of privately-funded colleges each year. The rapid growth of these schools has its own root.
The reasons lie in many ways. Firstly, state-owned universities are not sufficient to take in all the high-school graduates, and therefore a great number of students are denied the chance to go to college. A recent survey shows that only about 30% of the graduates from high schools can continue their education. Secondly, the rapid economic growth creates a huge demand for well-educated people. To meet the social needs, our government encourages the establishment of new colleges with individual or collective funds. Thirdly, many Chinese families are able to afford higher tuition fee needed to go to a private college. The expense of about 5,000 yuan each year is not beyond the income of most families.
In spite of the higher tuition fee, private colleges provide a large number of young people with access to higher education. They are, in a sense, doing a great favor to the improvment of civilization, and will move towards greater prosperity.

Why Do People Like to Try Their Luck on Lottery?
As a lucky dog, my uncle, who won the first prize of a car on lottery, is the envy of a good many people. Though he has a good company in lottery, few is as lucky as he is. However, there are still many people fond of trying their luck on lottery tickets.
Seemingly, winning a "big" prize is not the primary reason for the majority of lottery-goers to do so. A recent poll says that most of the goers think of the activity as an interesting means to make donations. In this way, they offer their help willingly and happily. Another factor is that all the people can afford dozens of lottery tickets. Usually, the face value of one ticket is two yuan RMB.
Owing to the participation of so many people, our society benefits a lot from this kind of public drive. A great deal of money is accumulated through the drive to help the disabled or promote our welfares. Heavy financial burden on the government is somewhat lightened. Thus, it is safe to say lottery does no harm to the luck-triers but much good to the nation.

Love on Campus
According to a recent survey, roughly six out of every ten college graduates have the experience of dating with the opposite sex. The number is not a surprise at all, considering that the age of college students is usually between 18 and 24. What is really worth bothering to care for, however, is the serious problems love affairs have presented.
The alarming one is the increase in violent incidents owing to love on campus. When failing to win desirable affection from their lovers, some girl students tend to commit suicide while boys turn to knife and poison for revenge. Besides, it is a painful fact that boys obtain money needed for their love in an improper way. To please their girl friends, boy students always dress smartly, shop generously and eat out frequently; but when finding no other quicker way to make the money needed than by stealing or cheating, they are on the way to imprisonment. Another sensitive problem is the growing pregnancy rate among girl students. The young students are subjected to blame for being too young to put themselves under sensible control, but school authorities cannot escape their share of responsibility.
With regard to universities, they should offer more than practial lectures on education of love; for example, debates about love on campus should be regularly held among the students, thus making themselves clear about the rights and wrongs of their action. Also, they should appoint some special instructors whose job should center round psychology of students in love as well as those with troubles in love affairs. In short, schools should stop acting as onlookers or critics in dealing with those students, and perform full responsibilities as an institution of developing well-rounded talents.

What Will College Students Come to Be?
China, like many other countries in the world, adapts written or oral examination as the only way to measure a student's school work. Undoubtedly, this practice has worked well in the selection of talents and helped a lot in the promotion of China's science and economy. However, focusing too much of their heart on high marks, college students bred in such an atmosphere may turn out to be graduates with flaws in character.
To be frank, some problems have arisen along with it. The primary one is the neglect of cultivation of students' creativity and innovativeness. Some, though excellent in examinations, are not able to perform given tasks very well or to work out something original as they have been closely confined to their texbooks. Another one is the failure to produce men of fine morals. No matter how well they do in their school work, some of them are fascinated only with their own interests and work every way to climb to power, usually ending up corrupt officials or even criminals.
Today, it is a major concern as to how to improve the students' qualities in the course of their higher education. One way to achieve the goal, in my opinion, is to offer students more chances to deal with practical world as well as theoretical books and ideal marks. Another is that some standards should be drawn up to judge a student's moral performance, to which more, or at least equal significance must be attached in evaluating his or her growth. With education on all sides being enforced, our young college students will grow up to be qualified not only in their fields but, more importantly, in moral cultivation.
